Madden Historic Rosters
I. Introduction.
We have access to many NFL periodicals and stats guides. For the basis of the rosters we will use NFL encyclopedias, professional research and resource centers, year by year guides, indexes, team websites and individual categorical all time team stat leaders. One of the ways to start to deduce who is who on these rosters is via a players height, weight and skin color and then all time team leaders in those individual categories. Offensive lineman make up the most difficult category to deduce as their exists little if any statistical info. Therefore it takes careful historical research.
The one thing about teams from the past is the size of the rosters. Teams from the 50's, 60's,70's, 80's and 90's all had different roster allotments, but madden assumes all teams have current roster sizes. This formula will leave many blanks on your older teams in those cases we have just left them blank and tried to give suggestions at the bottom of the roster listings.. For example the 79 Buccaneers have five receivers listed on the madden roster but in reality the 79 Bucs only carried 4 receivers on roster for the entire 79 season( something unheard of in today's game) Every attempt has been made to include every player that played in at least one game. Many players that madden did not include we have listed at the bottom of the rosters.
Depth charts are listed as they would appear on your madden TV screen in order. we have not made any depth chart changes, although slight adjustments have been made to either height or weight when applicable.
In previous versions of madden (04, 05 & 06) you could give any jersey number to any player at any position for the historic rosters. This was helpful since players of bygone eras were not restricted to the number rules of todays game. Well this has seemingly changed for the 07, 08 & 09 madden versions. It seems many past players may not be able to wear their actual jersey numbers when edited. I will list the jersey number restrictions below by position.
We will try to offer alternate historical jersey numbers when applicable if it all possible. Just another example how the madden crew pays little attention to the historical rosters. This really kinda sucks. Or maybe it is just a problem with the ps2 version?

There is a way around this for some players. You can edit a player to another postition and then edit him back. But still you are limited in what position you can change a player to. So you still cannot give a lineman a number in the teens for example or a kicker/punter a number other than 1-19. Here is a listing of player position edit restrictions:
